Triumph of a Mother's Spirit: Melissa's Journey
By the Vana Care team | 15 October 2024
As the CEO of Vana Care, I've seen the strength of the human spirit more times than I can count. Even so, Melissa's story stands apart. She is a mother, a member of our Vana Care family, and one of the most resilient people I know. With her blessing, I want to share what she has taught all of us.
The day everything changed
Melissa was in the beautiful flow of single motherhood. She balanced her studies with raising her two children, Mason and Ayla, and her days were full of laughter, beach trips and the kind of energy that comes from genuinely loving your life.
Then, on 26 August 2021, everything changed in an instant. A sudden cardiac arrest led to a severe brain injury and a diagnosis no family ever expects.
The world Melissa woke to was a labyrinth of confusion. Memory loss and physical limitations fuelled anger and frustration. But through the haze, her children became her true north, a reason to fight with unbreakable ferocity.
Becoming part of Melissa's village
This is where Vana Care became an extension of Melissa's village. Jason, Vana Care's co-founder, and I have known Melissa since our youth, so this was never just another referral. We were personally invested in building the most complete care and support team we could imagine for her.
Support workers like Jessamy and Ben became more than professionals. They became anchors, supporting Melissa through the hard physical work of rehabilitation, finding laughter on the difficult days, and holding an unwavering belief in what she could achieve. That mix of practical in-home support and genuine human connection is, to me, what good disability support actually looks like.
Hard-won victories
Melissa's recovery has been a sequence of hard-won victories, each one proof of her courage:
- Returning home to Mason and Ayla
- Regaining her driver's licence
- Meeting, then beating, every goal set for her during brain rehabilitation
Her transformation was ignited by her own determination, and propelled by the love of her partner, Blake, and the devoted team around her. None of it was quick, and none of it was easy. Progress after a brain injury rarely moves in a straight line, and there were setbacks along the way. What never wavered was the reason she kept going.
Turning negatives into positives
A profound shift has taken place within Melissa. "Turn negatives into positives, live each day with heart-bursting gratitude" is now her guiding light.
She has become a passionate advocate for CPR training, determined to make sure other families have the skills that saved her life. When a cardiac arrest happens, the actions of the people nearby in those first few minutes can change everything. Melissa knows that better than almost anyone, and she wants every parent, partner and workmate in South Australia to feel confident enough to step in.
Melissa isn't simply aiming for recovery. She is building a life full of purpose. She plans to live past 90 and to pay forward the support she received. And this is where her bond with our team runs even deeper. Many of the people supporting Melissa, like Jessamy, are mothers themselves. They understand, in a way that can't be taught, a mother's love and the drive to fight for your children.
What support like Melissa's looks like in practice
Every person's situation is different, but Melissa's team shows the shape of what wraparound support can be. For people recovering from a serious injury or living with disability, that often includes:
- Help at home with daily routines, so energy can go towards recovery and family rather than chores
- Encouragement and hands-on assistance with therapy and rehabilitation goals, week after week
- Community access support to get back out into the world, from appointments to the activities that make life feel like yours again
- Consistent, familiar faces who know your story, rather than a revolving door of strangers
The right support team doesn't take over a person's life. It backs their goals, celebrates the wins and keeps showing up on the hard days.
Why we share stories like this
Vana Care was founded in 2021, the same year as Melissa's cardiac arrest, by two mates who believed disability support in Adelaide should feel personal. You can read more about how we started on our about us page. Stories like Melissa's are the reason we do this work. They are a reminder that behind every NDIS plan is a person, a family and a future worth fighting for.
Melissa's story isn't finished. It is ongoing proof of the life-changing power of community, and a reminder that even in the darkest hours, a mother's love shines through as a guiding star.
If her story resonates, you might also like Renee's story of fighting for her children, or you can hear from more families in their own words on our reviews page.
