Luke's Story: Rebuilding Life After Brain Injury

By the Vana Care team | 28 October 2024

A brain injury can take more than physical ability. It can take motivation, confidence and the everyday pleasures that make life feel like your own. For Luke, an Adelaide man, it took fishing. This is the story of how he got it back, along with 30 kilograms of weight loss, a renewed sense of independence and a boat he now skippers himself.

When the things you love feel out of reach

For years after his brain injury, Luke struggled with motivation. The activities he once loved felt far away, and he found himself isolated and unsure about the future.

Anyone who has lived with an acquired brain injury, or cared for someone who has, will recognise that pattern. The injury itself is only part of the challenge. The harder part often comes later, in the form of low energy, low confidence and a slow drift away from hobbies, friends and routines. Without the right support, that drift can quietly become the new normal.

That was where Luke found himself when he first connected with Vana Care.

A different kind of support

Luke's turnaround did not come from one big intervention. It came from steady, personalised support, delivered by workers who took the time to understand who he was before his injury and who he wanted to be after it.

Through regular community access support, Luke's team helped him set goals that felt achievable, then showed up consistently to work towards them with him. Some weeks that meant exercise. Other weeks it meant planning, encouragement and simply having someone in his corner who believed the next step was possible.

Bit by bit, Luke tapped back into his passions, rebuilt his independence and stepped confidently back into his own life.

The results speak for themselves

Luke's progress has been remarkable:

  • He has lost 30 kilograms through regular exercise
  • He has rebuilt the motivation and confidence that his injury had eroded
  • Most importantly, he has found his way back to something he thought was lost forever, fishing

After years of doubt, Luke can now cast a line from his own boat, living the independent life he deserves.

"An inspiration to us all"

"We're extremely proud of what Luke has achieved, and his story is an inspiration to us all," says Jason, who co-founded Vana Care with Jes in 2021. "We believe everyone deserves to live a fulfilling, independent life, and through tailored support programs, we aim to help individuals like Luke to rediscover their passions and strive towards their goals."

The support Luke found at Vana Care goes beyond mentorship. It's a personalised approach that helps him set achievable goals and provides ongoing encouragement, week after week.

What actually made the difference

Looking back at Luke's progress, a few things stand out. None of them are complicated, but together they changed everything.

The right worker match. Support works best when the participant genuinely likes the person turning up. Luke's workers shared his interests and treated his goals as their own.

Goals that started small. Losing 30 kilograms sounds daunting. A walk this week does not. Big outcomes were broken into steps Luke could actually take.

Consistency. Progress with an acquired brain injury rarely comes in leaps. It comes from the same encouragement, the same routine and the same familiar faces, sustained over months.

Celebrating the wins. Every milestone mattered, from the first kilogram to the first cast off the boat.

Common questions

Can a support worker help with exercise and fitness goals?

Yes. If improving your health and fitness relates to the goals in your NDIS plan, a support worker can join you at the gym, on walks, at the pool or wherever you like to move. Regular activity often flows into other parts of life too, including sleep, mood and confidence. We've written more about this in our guide to staying active in South Australia.

Does Vana Care support people with an acquired brain injury?

Yes. We're a registered NDIS provider (registration 4050094069) offering community access, in-home support and supported independent living across Greater Adelaide and nearby regional South Australia. Many of the people we support live with an acquired brain injury, and every plan is built around the person, not the diagnosis.

What if I'm not sure what supports my NDIS plan covers?

That's common, and it's nothing to be embarrassed about. We don't provide support coordination or plan management ourselves, but we're happy to look at your situation and point you in the right direction. Get in touch and we'll talk it through.

How do we get started?

Reach out by phone, email or our website and tell us a little about yourself or the person you care for. We'll chat about goals, interests and the kind of support worker who'd be a great fit, then take it from there at whatever pace suits you.

Hope for others

Luke's story offers hope to anyone facing similar challenges, and to the families standing beside them. The things a brain injury takes away are not always gone for good. With patient, personalised support, motivation can return, health can improve and old passions can come back to life.

If you or someone you love could benefit from disability support, we'd love to hear from you. You can build a personalised quote in a few minutes at Get Support, call us on 08 7228 6202 or email hello@vanacare.com.au. Our team is here to help.
